DayBreaks for 010/08/12 – Bring the Candles
The time was the 19th of May, 1780. The place was Hartford, CT. The day has gone down in New England history as a terrible foretaste of Judgment Day. For at noon the skies turned from blue to gray and by mid-afternoon had blackened over so densely that, in that religious age, men fell on their knees and begged a final blessing before the end came. The Connecticut House of Representatives was in session. And as some men fell down and others clamored for an immediate adjournment, the Speaker of the House, one Colonel Davenport, came to his feel. He silenced them and said these words: “The Day of Judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. I wish, therefore, that candles may be brought.”
There are many things in life that we have to be “ready” for. We have to be ready to go to school, or work. We get ready to go on a date. We get ready to go to the doctor’s or the grocery store. We get ready for our wedding or to go to a funeral. Life is a long series of preparations!
We are warned in Scripture that we are to be ready for several things: we are to be ready for acts of service, but of course, the BIG one is to be ready for His return.
“Be dressed for service and well prepared, 36 as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast. Then you will be ready to open the door and let him in the moment he arrives and knocks. 37 There will be special favor for those who are ready and waiting for his return. I tell you, he himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and eat! 38 He may come in the middle of the night or just before dawn. But whenever he comes, there will be special favor for his servants who are ready! – Luke 12:35-39
I can identify with their reaction. There have been several instances in my life where I thought the Return was upon me. And, much like some of those in the Connecticut House that day, I instantly took up an attitude and posture of prayer!!!!
I love the calm, assured reaction of Colonel Davenport…either we are ready when it comes, or we aren’t. If we suspect, as we anticipate that event, that we won’t be ready, we better get that way! And, if we are ready, then “there is no cause for adjournment”…and let us all be found doing our duty!
PRAYER: Let us serve and be ready always, doing our duty for our King! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If Jesus came to your house
To spend some time with you,
If He came unexpected,
I wonder what you’d do.
Oh, I know you’d give your nicest room
To such an honored guest
And all the food you’d give to Him
Would be the very best.
And you would keep assuring Him
You’re glad to have Him there–
That serving Him in your home
Is joy beyond compare.
But when you saw Him coming,
Would you meet Him at the door
With arms outstretched in welcome
To your heavenly visitor?
Or would you have to change your clothes
Before you let Him in
Or hide some magazines
And put the Bible where they’d been
Would you hide your worldly music
and put some hymn books out?
Could you let Jesus walk right
in, or would you rush about?
And I wonder – if the Saviour
spent a day or two with you,
Would you go right on doing, the
things you always do?
Would you go right on saying, the
things you always say?
Or would life for you continue
as it does from day to day?
Would you take Jesus with you
everywhere you go?
Or would you maybe change your
plans for just a day or so?
Would you be glad to have Him
meet your closest friends?
Or would you hope they stay away,
until His visit ends?
Would you be glad to have Him
stay forever on and on?
Or would you sigh with great
relief when He at last was gone?
It might be interesting to know,
the things that you would do,
If Jesus came in person, to spend
some time with you.

They should have written an answer to the song like
Would Jesus come to your house when passing by one day or would He hide His face from you and walk the other way?
And would He wonder why you live in secret and in sin when you tell everyone you know, about your love for him.
Could He be wanting just to share a meal with His best friend, and are you thinking He’s just hear to check me out again!
Would you suspect that he would dine with you at your big table, when he could be with better folks because he’s God and able?
Should you deserve that he would think of you in such a way?,or would He to come to your house because you pray each day?
Or some other similar Facsimile?
