DayBreaks for 01/06/15 – Living as a Christ-less Christian
The great preacher, Fred Craddock, once told a parable about a man who moved into a cottage which had a stove for heating and very simple furnishings. As the sharp knife-edge of winter cut across the landscape and into the bones of the man, the cottage grew quite cold. In his effort to keep warm, the man went out back and pulled a few boards off the back side of the house in order to kindle a fire in the stove. The fire was warm, but the house seemed as cold, or colder, than before. More boards came off the outside of the house for a larger fire to warm the now even colder house, which in return required an even larger fire, demanding more boards. In a few days the man cursed the weather, cursed the house, cursed the stove, and moved away.
This story strains the credibility, but it is a parable, designed to each us a point. The futility that man felt is not any different than the futility of those who try to live the Christian life without Christ. He is the Word that was in the beginning with God and was God. And he is alive today. To those of us who are drowning he is someone we can hold on to. He is someone who can set our feet on dry ground again.
In our desperation to try to breathe warmth and life into our existence, in our determination to make things “work” in our life, we rip and tear things apart and get more and more miserable with each passing day. Such is the struggle of the Christ-less Christian – the person who believes that they can summon what they need themselves to meet their need, when in reality all they are doing is digging in deeper and deeper to frustrated desperation.
PRAYER: In our pride we are foolish, in our foolishness we believe that we, ourselves, are enough! Don’t let us die in our foolishness, but live in a Christ-filled life! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
