DayBreaks for 01/05/15 – Time to Do Right
It isn’t hard to “give up” on doing what is right. It doesn’t seem to be rewarded. We’ve tried over and over to correct things that are wrong both in ourselves and in the culture, only to find that it doesn’t seem to make any difference. And so we, weary and worn, surrender the effort.
In the early ’60s, at the height of the civil rights movement, a group of white ministers issued a public statement urging Dr. Martin Luther King, in the name of the Christian faith, to be more patient in his quest for justice and to relax the relentless struggle for civil rights. King’s response came in the form of the famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” In the letter, King indicated that he had received similar requests for delay, indeed, that he had just gotten a letter from a “white brother in Texas” who wrote, “… It is possible you are in too great a religious hurry … The teachings of Christ take time to come to earth.” Dr. King replied that such an attitude stemmed from a sad misunderstanding of time, the notion that time itself could bring healing and solve problems.
King knew that complete justice must await the coming of God. We will not see complete justice in our lifetimes unless it is due to the return of the Lord. In the meantime, if we can make even a tiny corner of the world better by doing right, it is worth it. “…the time is always ripe to do right.”
PRAYER: Through your strength, may we contribute to the world becoming a better place as we do what is right! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
