DayBreaks for 2/24/14 – Beware What You Grab

DayBreaks for 2/24/14 – Beware What You Grab

From the time we learn we have hands that can move according to our will, we start grabbing at things around us. We grab for a rattle, for a bottle, a stuffed toy, our pacifiers. As we start getting a bit older and learn to play with other kids, we see them grab for our toys and we learn to grab for theirs.

Sadly, it isn’t just little children that are “grabbers”. We do it all our lives. We grab for someone else’s girl/boyfriend. We scramble and grab for power, for money, for recognition and fame. We grab for the gusto because we are told to do so by powerful marketing machines. We grab for what we think will bring happiness and contentment, joy and fulfillment. We are very slow learners.

Once there was an eagle which hovered over a lake and suddenly swooped down and caught a two-foot long fish in its talons. Slowly, the bird rose with its ten pound catch, but when it reached about 1,000 feet, it began to descend, until it splashed into the water. Later, both the bird and fish were found dead. Apparently the fish was too heavy for the eagle, but it could not let go, for its talons were embedded in the flesh of the fish. The truth is that what we grab, grabs us. When we grab alcohol, drugs, or sex, it grabs us and brings us down to death.

There is, however, one thing that we should be grabbing and to which we should hold fast. Just as Jacob wrestled with the Lord and held on tightly so he could receive a blessing, we should realize that it is only when we latch hold of God that the fulfillment and joy we are looking for will ultimately be found.

You will have a choices today about what you will hold on to. Will you hold on to the encouragement of a superior who tells you to do something that is unethical in order to close that deal or placate a client? Will you hold fast to your wedding vows because of Him? Will you choose to follow Him, to grab Him and hold on for all you are worth, today?

Hebrews 6:18 (MSG)  – God can’t break his word. And because his word cannot change, the promise is likewise unchangeable. We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go.

PRAYER: Lord, our problem isn’t really knowing what we should grab and hold on to, but in doing it! Help us reach for You and to hold on tightly no matter what! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
