DayBreaks for 11/07/13 – Religious Folk and Dancing Shadows
Luke 22:1-2 (NLT) The Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is also called Passover, was approaching. 2 The leading priests and teachers of religious law were plotting how to kill Jesus, but they were afraid of the people’s reaction.
From the other gospel accounts, we know that it was night-time when Judas met with the religious leaders to orchestrate the capture and killing of Jesus. Even without much imagination, one can almost picture the clandestine meetings of the leaders, taking place at night (when darkness rules both the skies and hearts of men). Perhaps they were meeting in the home of Caiaphas, lanterns aglow and the darkened shadows of the men dancing and flickering on the walls of the room as they gestured and argued back and forth about how evil Jesus was, about the threat he posed to their way of life – all tempered by their fear of the crowd’s response. By the time the trial of Jesus rolled around, they had come to the conclusion that the way to win a crucifixion for Christ was to manipulate the crowd.
This is, tragically, not much different than what happens in churches today where a few disgruntled members start holding one-on-one, two-on-two meetings to impugn and attack a follower of Jesus in the congregation. A common target is the pastor or his family, but it can be anyone. They, too, know that in order to get someone ousted that they have to shape and then control the opinions of the crowd in order to get their way. Lies and gossip were involved in the killing of Jesus. It has been involved in the killing of many reputations and churches, too.
Jesus, however, wasn’t the only one affected by these actions. The religious leaders are now long dead and gone…but they have met Jesus again….and they have had to answer for their actions. Consider that the next time you’re tempted to gossip about one of His children!
PRAYER: Lord, sometimes it seems that the darkness of the human heart knows no limits. Forgive us for the many times we have spoken ill of your children and of others. Remind us all that we will give have to answer for every word we speak, and perhaps especially those we speak against You or one of Your children! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
