DayBreaks for 11/01/13 – “Treeing” Your Sin

The Canadian Ironman competition involves a 2 mile, 636 yard swim, followed by nearly a 112 mile bike ride, and ending with the traditional 26 mile, 172 yard marathon run – and it’s all done back to back, of course.  I’ve never done it, nor do I intend to.

The Ironman competition however, is not just a physical fitness competition, but a battle of the mind over matter and pain. In the race, all of a racer’s self-doubts and inner demons rise to the surface, especially if a competitor doesn’t know his or her own strengths and weaknesses.

Among the mental tricks that helps competitors when the doubts start to creep in is something known by Ironman competitors called “treeing.” If a negative thought comes up during the race,, it is often hard to switch it to a positive. So what do the competitors do?  They run up to trees, touch them and thus, “give the negative emotions to the tree.”  The “babble” and doubt settles down and they are able to continue on.

There is a Christian parallel here: when we become a Christian, we “tree” our sin. We touch the cross (tree – Galatians 3:13) and the Savior that hung there; giving Him our sin and guilt, doubts and fears, and taking from him His righteousness. – adapted from The Sun Review Magazine March 26, 2000, submitted by Dave Bootsma

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” – 2 Cor. 5:21

As you are running the race of your life today, perhaps you need to “tree” your sins and remind yourself that those sins have already been paid for in full.  If it helps, literally go touch a tree.  Feel it’s texture, for it was on a tree that your salvation was purchased so you could be free!

PRAYER: Thank you for hanging on the tree for us and for freeing us from the pain we would otherwise need to bear!  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
