DayBreaks for 10/30/13 – Playing the Final Chord
Galatians 3:3 (MSG) Are you going to continue this craziness? For only crazy people would think they could complete by their own efforts what was begun by God. If you weren’t smart enough or strong enough to begin it, how do you suppose you could perfect it?
There’s a true story about how one of the most famous composers had a rebellious son who used to leave his room after his parents had gone to bed, and go into the piano room. Once there, the son would go to his father’s piano and slowly, spitefully and LOUDLY would play a simple scale, omitting the final note. He would play, “Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti…” and then he wouldn’t strike that final “Do.” Then he’d leave the piano and go to his room for the night.
Meanwhile, his dad, being the musician that he was, had heard the scale minus the final note, and would twist and turn in bed, unable to relax because the scale was not finished.
Eventually, unable to stand it any longer, the father would crawl out of bed, stumble down the stairs and play the final note of the scale. Only then could he relax and sleep peacefully.
This story is interesting because it is parallel to how we often treat God. We play around with some of the notes of faith, but we don’t play the full scale:
– We forgive, but not completely.
– We love, but not completely.
– We serve, but not completely.
– We accept Christ, but not completely.
– We live the Christian life-style but not completely.
– We commit our lives to God, but not completely.
It must drive God crazy, but even when we treat Him shabbily, in his infinite patience and amazing grace, he continues to reach out to us and he continues to love us. And when in our human weakness we cannot play the final chord, He will play it for us.
PRAYER: Loving Father, thank You for making up, through Your grace and mercy, all of our shortcomings! Thank You for finishing the song that we can only start through our acceptance of Jesus’ finished work on Calvary! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
