DayBreaks for 10/28/13 – The Best Show of Faithfulness
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. – Mt. 28:20
Matthew 1:23 (NLT) – Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’”
Who, and what, is Jesus for you? Is He the impossible-but-true image of the God whose incomprehensible commitment to us looks like incarnation – an incarnation destined to wend its way from Bethlehem to a cross-topped hill in the environs of Jerusalem? Or is he something else to you?
There are many who want Jesus to be the magical medicine man who heals every disease of a loved one. There are many who want him to be like the millionaire of the TV show long ago who would give a million dollars out of the blue to someone who he picked? And don’t our prayers often make it seem like we think Jesus is some sort of cosmic vending machine who has come to give us our choice of health, wealth, fame, power or the like?
Michael Card put it well when he wrote: Could it be that he came not to wave the magic wand and make the cancer go away, but to enter into our sufferings? Could it possibly be true that the best show of faithfulness is not the healing or the unexpected check, but the unthinkable truth that God has chosen to be with us through it all? Could it be that the greatest miracle is not provision, but presence?
Something to think about…
PRAYER: Often, Lord, we treat you as if you came to prevent or solve all our problems rather than join us in the midst of them. As we encounter struggles in our lives, Jesus, help us to look not for you as a way of escape, but as the One who will pass through the fire and suffer besides us and assures us that we will come out on the other side. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
