DayBreaks for 09/11/13 – Caught In the Flood
NOTE: Galen is on vacation this week. DayBreaks this week are from the archives, September 2003:
Psalm 117 – Praise the LORD, all you nations; extol him, all you peoples. 2 For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD. (NIV)
You’ve just read the entire 117th chapter of Psalms. It is the shortest chapter in the Bible – a grand total of 2 verses. You might be tempted to think that two verses couldn’t have much to say to us, but you’d be wrong.
FIRST: this is one of the first places in Scripture that notes that ALL nations are to praise the Lord. Rather than a mindset that God belonged only to the Jews, and that it was only the Jews who were to praise God, the psalmist proclaims that it is the duty of all mankind to praise Him!
SECOND: “For great is his love toward us…”. Another translation puts it this way: “Great is his prevailing love toward us”. The word that is translated “prevailing” is the same word that was used elsewhere to describe the flood waters that prevailed over the surface of the earth in the times of Noah, and of Israel prevailing in battle as long as Moses’ hands were raised toward heaven. The point: God’s love floods us…you might even say that we are submerged in His love! What a beautiful picture of our position in Christ and of His love!
FINALLY: Lest we should think that God is fickle, that His love may prevail for us one moment and then wane in the very next moment, we are reminded that His faithfulness endures forever. It is interesting that the psalmist chose the word “endures” and not “lasts”. You see, God has to endure a lot at my hands. Yet in spite of all the hurt I may bring Him, His love still endures through it all.
PRAYER: Lord, sometime today we may be tempted to think that we are outside of Your love for us. It is at those moments that we need You to hold us the closest so that we never forget we can never outlive or out sin Your love for us! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
