DayBreaks for 06/21/13 – Out of Gas

pumping-gasRomans 8:13-14 (NLT) – For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

One New Year’s Day, in the Tournament of Roses parade, a beautiful float suddenly sputtered and quit.  It was out of gas.  The whole parade was held up until someone could get a can of gas.

The amusing thing was this float represented the Standard Oil Company.  With its vast oil resources, its truck was out of gas.

Laugh about it while you can, but the reality is that often, Christians who are to be “clothed with power” (Lk. 24:49) often find themselves out of gas spiritually because they have been neglecting their spiritual maintenance.  The passage (above) from Romans is talking about temptation and sin in context, but the Spirit that it describes is the power that is to be dominant in our lives.  It is the Spirit that raised Christ from the dead.  It is the Spirit by which the apostles and disciples have wrought miracles throughout the Christian dispensation.  It is the Spirit which will one day raise us from the dead.  THIS is the Spirit of POWER!

So, why are so many Christians constantly “out of gas” spiritually?  There may be various reasons and I don’t want to try to address them all, but the most likely explanation is that we haven’t been filling our “Spirit-tank” with the right kind of fuel.  We fill it with entertainment, diversions, dawdlings and frivolity instead of with Spiritual food and fuel.

Let’s change how we spend so much of our time and start “tanking up” for the task all around us!

PRAYER: Infuse us, Spirit!  We need your energy and power!  Give us the strength to pursue you, to run hard after you and grasp hold of you!  Fill us!  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
