DayBreaks for 06/20/13 – The Nonsensical God

poker-game-skill-nonsensical-thumbLamentations 3:22 (NIV) – Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.

Keith Wagner, in The Supremacy of Love, wrote the following: “I have some items in my garage that I have been holding on to. I’m waiting for the day I have a garage sale so I can make some money. You know what they say, “waste not, want not.” Why throw away a perfectly good item when you can make some money on it, right? A friend said to me, “Why don’t you just set it out. Someone will surely come by that can use it. Then you will have more room and be free of something you really don’t need.”

“My friend was right. We have a habit of holding on to things that might have value. Giving away something that we could turn into cash would be unthinkable. It wouldn’t make any sense.

“Does love have to make sense?”

We talk a lot about how God’s love for us just doesn’t make sense…especially when we have come to understand the darkness of our sinfulness and how many times we have hurt Him.  (Doesn’t it seem strange to think that the created beings can actually hurt the Creator?  What an amazing concept!)  Once we understand that, we must be overcome with the awareness that God’s love for us is so amazing, so nonsensical, that it blows our tiny little human minds.

But what about our love for others?  How often do we do things which don’t make sense but which show love for others?  Or do we wrestle with the decision to do something nonsensical for others because, well, it would make us look foolish?  Does God look foolish for loving creatures such as us who hurt Him over and over?  Perhaps.  But he’s willing to take that risk.  Are we?

PRAYER:  Let us be foolish in our imitation of Your love!  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
