DayBreaks for 04/04/13 – A Pleasing Fragrance
NOTE: I am on a missions trip/internship to Africa and will be gone until 5/25. Please pray for God’s work to go forth mightily, for protection for myself and those with whom I will be working, and for my wife in my absence! Thank you…I cherish your prayers! You will be receiving DayBreaks as usual (from the archive) after today until I’ve returned.
John 12:3 – “Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.”
I’m not real big on perfume. I seldom wear after shave or cologne. I guess I’ve just known too many people who seem to bathe in perfume or cologne and it can be a bit overwhelming! Where some people like the smell of perfumes, I’m more into the smell of food! Talk about a pleasing smell!
I would imagine that you know that flowers are a key ingredient in many perfumes. But it isn’t until the flower petals are crushed that they give off their best and strongest fragrance. A DayBreaks reader recently shared this with me: “Forgiveness is the fragrance a flower gives off when it is crushed underfoot. What is the fragrance we give off when we are crushed by others? One hopes that it is forgiveness…”
2 Cor. 2:14 – “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.”
Whether we like it or not, as Christians, we give off a fragrance. The particular fragrance we are to give off is the knowledge of Christ. Don’t think for a moment that everyone will like this fragrance, however. “To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?” (2 Cor. 2:16) The smell of death isn’t pleasant, but it is a warning. To those who don’t want to know Christ, we will stink – and they will avoid us. To others, however, we are the fragrance of life. It is a fragrance that speaks volumes about forgiveness – for we know we have been forgiven much, and that in return we are to forgive others.
How’s your fragrance? At the end of the day today, did your life give off a pleasing aroma regarding God and His family? Or did your bitterness and unforgiving spirit cause a stink wherever you went?
