DayBreaks for 05/25/12 – The Increasing Value of Time

Speeding away…into eternity…

Ephesians 5:15-16 (NKJV)  See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Time.  We have a saying that “Time is money.”  I suppose that has always been true, but I suspect that the concept of time, and the value of it, has changed greatly over the past 25 years.  Once, businesses moved with a slower pace than they do today.  When once it took days to get a letter across the country the pace of time, and the value of it, moved much more slowly.

Now, however, when business moves at the speed of electrons and the window for profit and loss is greatly contracted, we are seeing the value of even miniscule slices of time: “In April, a research ship will begin surveying the Atlantic Ocean floor off of Nova Scotia as the first step to building, by 2013, a $300 million private fiber-optic line connecting New York and London financial markets so as to speed up current transmission times–by about five milliseconds. Those five milliseconds, though (according to an April report in Bloomberg Business Week), will enable the small group of firms that are underwriting the project (and who will have exclusive use of it) to earn millions of dollars per transaction by having their trade sales arrive five milliseconds before their competitors’ sales would have arrived.” [Bloomberg Business Week, 4-2-2012]  News of the Weird, 4/29/12

Long ago, Paul spoke of redeeming (“buying back”) time – in specific, the times in which we live.  What does it mean today for us to “redeem the time” and what does it look like in a modern world?  For one thing, it means we must be able to give quick, succinct, yet persuasive sound bites for what we believe and why we believe it to be true and worthwhile.  Where once we may have had the luxury of long, leisurely conversations, we need to figure out how to bear witness and testimony very rapidly, yet with reason and conviction.

But there is an even greater reason that time is so valuable: when it runs out for the individual or for the entire creation, the time for choosing is gone, over, finished.  Time is precious.  Why?  Because souls are dying without Christ.  And every soul is worth far more than the millions of dollars made in a five millisecond advantage over a competitor.

PRAYER: We foolishly think we have time for leisure, Lord.  Help us understand the times in which we live and how to redeem this present age for you!  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I always think of something Jesus said he said “As it was in the beginning it shall be in the latter days and it seem to me it will all go back to those days until he comes again. We are going b ackwards and I am glad in a way for the days will be over and we will see the Lord in the air and ,live with him forever!!
