DayBreaks for 09/02/11 – Keep the Schedule

Stick to the schedule...

However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself.  Only the Father knows.  And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard!  Stay alert!  The coming of the Son of Man can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip.  When he left home, he gave each of his slaves instructions about the work they were to do, and he told the gatekeeper to watch for his return.  You, too, must keep watch!  For you don’t know when the master of the household will return – in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak.  Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning.  I say to you what I say to everyone: Watch for him!  – Mark 13:32-37

One of the evangelistic tools well-meaning Christians have used has been to ask the question: “If you were to die tonight, where would you go?”  Personally, while that kind of approach may work with some I think there are better approaches.  But there is something good about that question: it reminds us of ultimate matters such as life, death, and eternal destiny.  It causes us to at least pause to reflect a bit, doesn’t it?

One more ultimate matter is the second return of Christ.  We don’t know when it will be (nor does Harold Camping or others who claim to have it all figured out.)  That’s why Jesus’ teaching from Mark 13:32-37 (above) is so full of urgency.  “Be on guard!  Stay alert!  Watch for His return!”  “You, too, must keep watch.”  “Watch for him!”  Pretty clear, isn’t it?

The Lord wants us to live all the time as if today would be our last.  I think John Wesley was once asked “What would you do if you knew that tonight you would die?”  That great preacher of years gone by said, “I would do exactly what I have scheduled to do.”

Can you say that?

PRAYER: Give us watchful hearts and eyes and live so we wouldn’t have to change a thing if we knew that tonight we would die, or that Jesus would return!  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. When we were kids my older sister who died last year, usto make me laugh, she would go to bed all dressed up and my mother and us girls would ask here why are you all dressed up for bed? She would say”I don’t want to be caught naked when the Lord comes as a thief in the night.”She missed most of the point on that one. And she would wear two pairs of sox and etc.As she got older she began to understand this better that we are to put on the whole armour of God and to always be prepared in everything we do and Jesus said you will know by the signs and the times when the Lord will return. But none will know the day and the hour but God.I hope she is with him now and will come back when he returnes for me. Amen!
